TEXT

Nick A. from London became a millionaire. He didn’t win the lottery. He didn’t inherit property either. He designed a phone application which he then sold to Yahoo.

Nick’s experience is the perfect example of how a dream may become a reality. As a child he had always been interested in science. At the age of 9 he was editing videos and making 3-D models on his computer. At 12 he created his first app and earned 79 pounds. It encouraged him to develop his abilities. From day to day he was designing things that would completely change his life.

A few years later, at 15, Nick had the idea for an app that could summerize new stories. He wanted young people to get brief information about new stories. His application immediately became very popular and attracted investment from a big company. Then the internet giant, Yahoo, became interested and not only bought the app, but hired its bright, talented young inventor, too.

Now Nick is 17 years old, he plans to return to education and with time to take a degree. But most of all, he wants to start up new businesses and obviously continue developing his own ideas. Whatever happens, Nick’s future working life will certainly not be the normal routine that the majority of us have to look forward to.

Exercise 1.

Apllication; millionaire; fortune; property; routine; education; degree.

Return; inherit; win; design.

Either; immediately; obviously; whatever.

Exercise 2.

Their mobile application is an easy and convenient way to get additional information on the problem.

He spends as if he were a millionaire.

Every man is the master of his own fortune.

She made a fortune designing clothes.

He looks forward to inheriting property worth 5m dollars.

Whatever you do try your best.

He sent her an email immediately.

Erick doesn’t often go to the parties and his elder brother doesn’t either.

Steven’s sister won the first prize. She believed she would win the competition.

Reading has become a part of his daily routine.

Question. Which of the above sentences may serve you as a slogan?

Exercise 3. Past Simple.

Example: Bohdan wants to become a software designer. – Bohdan wanted to become a software engineer.

Oksana wants to become a fashion designer. – Oksana became a fashion designer.

1) He believed he would win the lottery. – Two days ago he … a lottery.

2) Uncle Phillip hoped that one day he would inherit property from his relatives in the USA. – 3) Last year uncle Phillip … property from his next of kin in the USA.

4) He is able to design modern furniture. – When he lived in London he … furniture for one of the local companies.

5) He decided to sell his car. – He … his car for five thousand dollars.

6) Jack is interested in astronomy. – Jack … interested in astronomy.

7) His project will create more jobs for young people. – His project will more jobs for young people.

8) Peter’s parents encourage his interest in science. – Peter’s parents … his interest in science.

9) Steven often tells us about his working life. – Steven often … us about his working life.

Exercise 4.

Exampl: Rick chose to do that job. – Did Rick choose to do that job? Why did Rick choose to do that job?

The company bought Nick’s application. – …

They hired the talented young man. – …

The boy wrote an essay about his future career. – …

The inventor sold his device to the big company. – …

Ivan planned to completely change his life. – …

The company did hire (hired) the young man talented?

His invention did his life change (changed)?

Did become (became) the giant company interested in his application?

Did his application investments attract (attracted)?

Exercise 7.

You. Hi, Nick, long time no see! How are you doing?

Nick. Hi, I am OK. It’s great to see you again.

You. Let me introduce you my friend …. He has heard a lot about you and he’s very excited to see you here.

Nick. Please to meet you, ….

Your friend.

Nick. Yes, I was 12 when I managed to design and develop my first app.

Your friend.

Nick. I was very happy.

Your friend.

Nick. It was interesting because science is my hobby.

Your friend.

Nick. Sure, I always spent my spare time with my parents and my schoolmates. I had many friends. I played sports and went to parties with my friends. I always behaved like all the other kids.

Your friend.

Nick. Yes, I’ve got lots of new ideas and plans.

Exercise 8.

Now Nick is 17 years old, he plans to return to education and with time to take a degree. But most of all, he wants to start up new businesses and obviously continue developing his own ideas. Whatever happens, Nick’s future working life will certainly not be the normal routine that the majority of us have to look forward to.

Now Nick is 17 years old. He plans to continue his studies. But most of all, he wants to start up new businesses. He hopes that his future working life will be happy and successful.

Exercise 9.

Past simple

Past Continuous

Past perfect

Present simple

Future simple

Past perfect?

As a child he had always been interested in science.

From day to day he was designing things that would completely change his life.

Exercise 10.

Where is Nick from?

Is he a millionaire?

Did Nick win a lottery or did he earn that money?

What kind of phone application did Nick design?

What phone applications do you know?

Have you got any phone applications?

Which do you think are the best phone applications?

How do they help you in your life?

What are you able to do on your computer?

What is your friend (brother, sister) able to do on his (her) computer?

Exercise 11.
